CAFE OTO London Sunday 16th August 2015 8pm
MASSIMO PUPILLO / CINDYTALK (DUO)
A second performance of the week for great bassist Massimo Pupillo (ZU, The Original Silence, Hairy Bones etc etc), this time in a very special duo alongside Scottish experimental artist Gordon Sharp’s long-running experimental project Cindytalk, who will shortly be releasing new album, ‘The Labyrinth Of The Straight Line’, on Editions Mego.
Massimo Pupillo is a bass player and composer originally from Rome Italy. He is mostly known for his work with the band Zu. For over fifteen years, his modus operandi of straddling and abusing musical genres has resulted in over 15 album releases across labels such as Ipecac, Atavistic, Daymare Recordings and Headz (Japan). John Zorn described Zu as “a powerful and expressive music that totally blows away what most bands do these days”.
Massimo has released over 50 albums and performed more than 2000 shows throughout Europe, US, Canada, Asia, Russia, Mexico and Africa, touring with the like of Mike Patton (as the Zu/Patton quartet), also sharing the stage with Faith No More, Sonic Youth, Fantomas, The Melvins, Lightning Bolt, The Ex, Nomeansno, Deerhoof, and countless others.
Cindytalk, born into a Scottish punk explosion in 1976 (as The Freeze), finally found their feet with a name change and a move to London in 1982.Since then a desire to create “a pure music” has been the ultimate aim. Many changes through the years bring us now into dual worlds of improvisation and computer composition.Alien landscapes.Desolate spaces.Inner truths.Ornette Coleman’s words, “I play pure emotion” always at the core of this fluid being. Some recall 1989’s abstract film soundwork “The Wind Is Strong…”, others the collaboration with 4ad’s ethereal house band This Mortal Coil. But most recently, releasing work through Vienna’s Editions Mego, Cindytalk seem to have found a home much more suited to their solitary and at times difficult path.A new eMego album, “The Labyrinth Of The Straight Line” is finished and due for release whilst a collaboration with Berlin’s Ancient Methods will be issued on Diagonal Records shortly.
